Gastric Flu: The Manifesting Symptoms
Gastric flu also goes by the name of stomach flu. In medical terms, it’s known as gastroenteritis. It’s an infection of the digestive system in which the stomach and intestinal part of digestive tract are affected. The viruses like rotavirus, norovirus, etc. cause an inflammation in the walls of stomach and intestinal regions. Hence, the functions of digestion are not optimally performed till the active impact of viruses persists.
The presence of the term ‘flu’ in this case mostly causes a misunderstanding. People interpret the infection to be somewhat in relation with common cold or flu that is an infection of the respiratory tract. In case of stomach flu, the incubation period, and manifesting gastric symptoms are not quite overlapping with the usual flu.
Symptoms of gastric flu may occur quite later than the actual reception of the virus itself. It’s called the incubation period when the virus remains in the body. Again, the symptoms of gastric flu vary even in the infected persons. However, the usual gastric flu symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fatigue, headache, fever, dehydration, etc.
The symptoms of gastric flu that are mostly experienced include vomiting and upset stomach diarrhea. As the proper digestive functions are not carried out due to the infected cell linings of intestine and stomach, the fluid loss from body takes place as diarrhea. If these are not replaced well, the dehydrating condition may also happen. Also, the whole body seems drained of energy, so muscle fatigue is common too.
These symptoms of gastric flu may occur within 48 hours of infection at the earliest. And these last for 2 to 4 days in general. However, the patient remains contagious and can infect others even 10 days after the apparent symptoms are gone. So, care must be taken to prevent such infection. If any of the above symptoms are experienced, a doctor must be referred to for proper medication and ease from discomforting gastric symptoms.
